Without a doubt, one of the most common topics for discussion in the PD world has to be what exactly constitutes PD. To take it in its most literal sense, Public Domain is something which is free, a program or suite of programs provided by an individual or group to be used by anyone who wishes. The idea behind public domain is that once available, anyone can have a copy of the PD disk, whilst paying no More than that necessary for the copying of the disk. In recent months there have been many letters in the magazines complaining that certain PD houses are 'ripping people off' - changing extortionate prices for something which should essentially be gratis. Well, fair enough, in certain instances this may be true, but what is sometimes not so obvious is the costs incurred in actually getting a disk from the PD house to the purchaser. As an example, here is a rough breakdown of the items which have to be budgeted for when pricing a public domain disk: Disks 123456 Post and packaging 3. Advertising Overheads (heating and lighting where necessary) 5. Maintenance of Equipment Duplication costs (wages may have to be paid) Some PD firms supply disks as an additional part of an already-established business, others merely as a sideline (eg the stereo-typed image of the schoolboy copying disks in his bedroom), Next Page \ Prey Page | Next Line \ Prey Line \ Rethesh \ Point File \ Exit PPione []
